Pediatric Obesity Fellowship Program

The Pediatric Obesity Fellowship Training Program is a comprehensive, one-year fellowship designed to provide specialized training for pediatricians, endocrinologists, and other healthcare professionals dedicated to combating childhood obesity. This program offers a unique opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge and hands-on experience in the prevention, assessment, and treatment of pediatric obesity, with a strong focus on both medical and surgical interventions.

Key Features:

  • Clinical Training: Fellows will work alongside expert clinicians in multidisciplinary teams, gaining experience in pediatric obesity management, including personalized nutrition counseling, physical activity promotion, and behavioral interventions. Training will cover a range of approaches, including medical, nutritional, psychological, and pharmacological interventions.
  • Fitness Assessments: A core component of the fellowship is the integration of fitness assessments into the management of pediatric obesity. Fellows will receive training in conducting and interpreting various physical fitness tests, including cardiorespiratory fitness evaluations, strength assessments, body composition analysis, and flexibility measurements. This hands-on experience will enhance their ability to tailor exercise interventions and track progress effectively, providing evidence-based insights into the physical health of children with obesity.
  • Adolescent Bariatric Surgery & Endoscopic Procedures: As part of the fellowship, fellows will gain training and experience in collaboration with multidisciplinary adolescent bariatric surgery teams. Fellows will be involved in pre-operative evaluations, post-operative care, and follow-up assessments for patients undergoing bariatric surgery. Additionally, they will receive training in the latest endoscopic techniques for weight loss management, such as endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty. This experience will help fellows understand the role of surgical and endoscopic interventions in managing severe pediatric obesity and provide insight into the selection, risks, benefits, and long-term outcomes of these treatments.
  • Research Opportunities: Fellows will have access to cutting-edge research in pediatric obesity, with opportunities to engage in clinical trials, epidemiological studies, and innovative health interventions. The program encourages fellows to design and execute their own research projects under expert mentorship.
  • Specialized Focus Areas: The curriculum offers advanced training in critical areas such as metabolic syndrome, comorbidities of obesity (type 2 diabetes, hyperlipidemia, PCOS), family-centered care, and the social determinants of health that influence childhood obesity. Fellows will learn to assess and manage these conditions in a pediatric population.
  • Community Engagement: Fellows will participate in outreach programs aimed at educating families, schools, and communities about obesity prevention.
  • Mentorship and Collaboration: The fellowship emphasizes mentorship with renowned specialists in pediatric obesity and provides a collaborative environment where fellows can learn from experienced clinicians and researchers. Fellows will have opportunities to collaborate with specialists in bariatric surgery, endocrinology, nutrition, exercise physiology, and mental health to provide holistic care.

This program is ideal for individuals seeking to become leaders in pediatric obesity care, contributing to the advancement of best practices in prevention, treatment, and research. Graduates will be equipped to make meaningful impacts on the health and well-being of children and families affected by obesity, with expertise in both medical and surgical approaches to obesity management.
